Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar, Yahya ibn Rashid said: We were sitting waiting for Abdullah ibn Umar who came out to us and sat. He then said:
“I heard the Apostle of Allah (Peace Be Upon Him) as saying: If anyone’s intercession intervenes as an obstacle to one of the punishments prescribed by Allah, he has opposed Allah; if anyone disputes knowingly about something which is false, he remains in the displeasure of Allah till he desists, and if anyone makes an untruthful accusation against a Muslim, he will be made by Allah to dwell in the corrupt fluid flowing from the inhabitants of Hell till he retracts his statement.“

Islamic Values of Justice in Society
In Islam, the concept of justice is not merely a legal or philosophical principle but a fundamental cornerstone of the faith, deeply rooted in the teachings of the Quran and the traditions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Islamic values of justice extend beyond the confines of the legal system to encompass all aspects of social interaction and governance within society.
Equality Before the Law
Central to Islamic principles of justice is the notion of equality before the law. Regardless of social status, ethnicity, or religious affiliation, every individual is entitled to fair treatment and due process under Islamic law. The Quran emphasizes, “O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives” (Quran 4:135). This verse underscores the imperative for impartiality and integrity in the pursuit of justice.
Compassion and Mercy
While justice demands accountability and adherence to the law, Islamic teachings also emphasise the importance of compassion and mercy in administering justice. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) exemplified this principle through his leniency and forgiveness, even towards those who wronged him. Islam encourages judges and authorities to exercise discretion and clemency when appropriate, striving to balance justice with compassion.
Protection of Rights
Islamic values of justice emphasise the protection of individual rights, including the rights of minorities, women, and marginalised groups. The Quran admonishes believers to “stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, even though it be against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, be he rich or poor” (Quran 4:135). This injunction underscores the obligation to defend the rights of all members of society, regardless of their circumstances.
Social Justice and Welfare
Beyond legal proceedings, Islam advocates for broader principles of social justice and welfare. The concept of Zakat (obligatory charity) and Sadaqah (voluntary alms) underscores the obligation to support the needy and alleviate social inequalities. Islamic societies are encouraged to establish systems that ensure the equitable distribution of wealth and resources, thereby fostering a more just and compassionate society.
Community Engagement and Accountability
Islamic values of justice emphasise the importance of community engagement and collective responsibility. Muslims are encouraged to actively participate in civic life, uphold ethical standards, and hold authorities accountable for their actions. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized, “Whosoever of you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then [let him change it] with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart — and that is the weakest of faith” (Sahih Muslim).
Islamic Values
Islamic values of justice emphasise equality, compassion, protection of rights, social welfare, and community engagement. By upholding these principles, Muslims strive to create societies that reflect the divine attributes of justice and mercy, fostering harmony, equity, and righteousness for all. Islamic values and principles underscore the imperative for proactive engagement in promoting justice and combating injustice within society.
